Islam is submission to the will of Allah. The Quran is Islam's central text.

The Quran claims continuity with prior revelation:

"Say, ˹O believers,˺ "We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us; and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and his descendants; and what was given to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them. And to Allah we all submit."" — Surah 2:136, from Quran.com

What must not be mashed

People: Muslims are individuals who submit to Allah and follow the teachings of Muhammad. Their behavior is not the doctrine. A Muslim who commits violence is not acting on Islamic teaching unless that teaching explicitly commands the act. Judgment requires opening the text.

Doctrine: The Quran makes claims. Those claims are not the same as the actions of Muslim-majority states or of militant groups that claim Islamic justification.

State: States that claim Islam are political entities. Their laws, their wars, their executions are state actions. The Quran's teachings are not the same as a state's interpretation of Sharia. Conflating doctrine with state action is a category error. Theology as lived faith is not a desk verdict.
