This is a signed analysis of the public record for 2 September 2026 in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial. Wednesday 2 September 2026 was the fifth deliberation day. Second deadlock note. Sullivan gave Tuey-Rodriguez charge. Dismissed shortly after 4 p.m., return Thursday 9 a.m. No verdict as of Wednesday close. This page does not decide criminal responsibility. It does not reconstruct the scene. It does not use private filings.

What the record shows

WCVB reports jurors returned to Plymouth Superior Court Wednesday for a fifth day of deliberations after reporting to the judge on Tuesday that they were deadlocked.1 The jury is composed of nine women and three men.1

Boston Globe reports jurors are set to continue deliberating for a fifth day.2 Globe reports Tuesday recap: about an hour after they began, jury informed Sullivan they could not come to a unanimous verdict; Sullivan instructed keep trying, noting over 80 witnesses and more than 300 exhibits; panel deliberated several more hours then requested to go home and return Wednesday.2

Associated Press reports jurors were set to resume deliberations Wednesday, a day after telling the judge they couldn't agree on whether she was criminally responsible.3 AP reports Tuesday morning note: unable to reach unanimous decision; Sullivan told them to keep trying.3 AP reports: "After deliberating in private for the rest of the day, the jury asked at around 3:30 p.m. to go home and resume deliberations in the morning."3

Boston 25 reports, on Tuesday: "Jurors were later dismissed for the day shortly after 3:30 p.m. without reaching a verdict. Deliberations are scheduled to resume Wednesday morning."4 Boston 25 reports Bob Ward post stamp on page: 3:32 p.m. — jury asked to go home; excused; back tomorrow at 9AM.4

CBS Boston reports deliberations ended for the day around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when the jury told Sullivan they wished to be dismissed for the day and return Wednesday at 9 a.m.5 CBS reports Sullivan said: "I just want to thank you for all your hard work and commitment so far in this case."5 CBS Boston reports: "The jury of nine women and three men has deliberated for more than 23 hours since they were given the case last Thursday."5

NBC News reports: "The jury … did not reach a verdict Tuesday and was instructed by the judge to return to court Wednesday for a fifth day of deliberations."6 NBC reports: "After returning to the courtroom briefly just after 3:30 p.m. ET, Sullivan excused the jury."6

Boston Globe reports 9:11 a.m. Travis Andersen: Sullivan took the bench, greeted the parties, called them to a sidebar.2

Boston Globe reports 9:13 a.m. Shelley Murphy: Before calling jurors in, Sullivan warned everyone in the courtroom and watching on livestream that he has issued an order, and there are statutes, to prevent anyone from interfering with witnesses or jurors. Sullivan said: "Everybody should be well aware that order and statute is being enforced and will be enforced."2

Boston Globe reports: "On Tuesday, a Sutton woman was arrested outside the courthouse around the time jurors were leaving for the day. She is slated to be arraigned this morning on witness intimidation charges."2

Boston Globe reports 9:17 a.m. Shelley Murphy: Sullivan is questioning each juror individually at sidebar, sworn, whether they have seen or heard anything affecting their ability to fairly decide. Clancy's lawyer and the two prosecutors standing nearby.2

Boston Globe reports Reddington (video/print ~8:00 a.m. stamp on page): "The fact that they have not said that they're done is very, very heartening," … "They're obviously working very hard." Also: "They kept at it," … "I think they're showing that they're more than willing to keep working at it." And: "I don't know that it's a good sign or a bad sign or any sign," … "It's that they're working hard to try to come to a decision."2

Associated Press reports Reddington: "The fact that they have not said that they're done is very, very heartening," … "Obviously, they're working very hard."3

Tuesday late-morning deadlock note and Sullivan continue instruction are detailed on the 1 September 2026 page.

Boston Globe reports 2:11 p.m. Travis Andersen: jury has a question.7

Boston Globe reports 2:18 p.m.: sidebar.7 WCVB reports: shortly after 2 p.m. Wednesday, jury sent another note reporting they were still stuck.8

Boston Globe reports 2:23 p.m.: Judge William Sullivan began reading the Tuey-Rodriguez charge.7 Boston Globe reports 2:27 p.m.: sent back.7

Boston Globe reports 3:12 p.m. Shelley Murphy: jurors appeared solemn; jury has deliberated for about 28 hours over five days; this is the second time jurors have sent word that cannot reach a unanimous decision; "Shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sullivan gave the jury the Tuey-Rodriguez charge, also known as a 'dynamite charge,' which effectively tells jurors there's no other group of people better able to reach a verdict in the case."7 Globe reports: "Jurors who are locked in on a conviction, or an acquittal, were urged to consider the opinions of each other, and also whether there is proof beyond a reasonable doubt in Clancy's case. Jurors appeared tired but serious. They gave nothing away with their expressions."7 Globe reports: trial is sixth week; "jurors heard from 84 witnesses."7

Boston 25 reports Sullivan quote from the Tuey-Rodriguez instruction: "There is no reason to suppose that the case will ever be submitted to 12 persons more intelligent, more impartial, or more competent to decide it, that more or clearer evidence will be produced," … "And with this in mind, it's your duty to decide the case, if you can do it conscientiously."9

WCVB reports Sullivan presented the Tuey-Rodriguez instruction, sometimes known as the "dynamite charge," which urges them to keep working and suggests there is no reason to believe a different jury would have an easier time reaching agreement. WCVB reports the instruction states: "There is no reason to suppose that the case will ever be submitted to 12 persons more intelligent, more impartial, or more competent to decide that more or clear evidence will be produced."8 WCVB reports: "About 90 minutes later, he sent the jurors home and asked them to return to work on Thursday."8

Boston 25 reports: dismissed shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday; return Thursday morning.9

Boston Globe reports 4:11 p.m. Nick Stoico: Judge William Sullivan sent the jury home for the day. They will return to court at 9 a.m. Thursday to continue deliberations. Sullivan: "I know it's been a long day," … "Remember my instructions, you all know them. I will see everybody tomorrow morning. Thank you." Globe reports: "The jury has been deliberating for nearly 30 hours over five days."7 Boston 25 reports: "roughly 30 hours over five days."9

Boston Globe reports 5:56 p.m. Nick Stoico: Reddington as he left the courthouse said he is prepared to retry the case immediately, should the jury remain deadlocked and a mistrial is declared. "If they come back with a verdict, we'll see what it is. If they don't, we're ready to try it next," Reddington told reporters. Reddington said he expects Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz to pursue first-degree murder charges again if there is a mistrial. Reddington was asked again if prepared for a second trial: "Ready right now."7

Boston Globe reports AP (Casey/Willingham) Sullivan at close: "I know it's been a long day," … thank you for time and commitment … "I'm going to ask you to come back tomorrow morning."10 AP dynamite charge paraphrase: not abandon convictions; consider opposing views; another jury not "more intelligent, more impartial or more competent to decide it than you are."10 AP reports: fifth day; twice said can't agree; return Thursday.10

Associated Press reports Elyse Hershon (analyst) quote: next deadlock "usually the mistrial call" — this is attributed as analyst commentary, not a court rule.10

Boston Globe reports 2:35 p.m. Lea Skene: after jurors left the courtroom after again telling the judge unable to unanimous decision, Reddington reached over and rubbed Clancy's back; seated in wheelchair at defense table, Clancy appeared to lean into Reddington for a moment; courtroom gallery filled with media and Clancy supporters, including parents and sister.7

Boston Globe reports (Ellement/Murphy 3:40 p.m.): retired judge Thomas Drechsler said Tuey-Rodriguez charge "generally" only given once before a mistrial is declared; "there's always some discretion"; once given, "often results" in a verdict, but "in other cases [a jury] remains deadlocked," leading to ultimate mistrial declaration.7

Boston Globe reports (Andersen 3:33 p.m.): state law says if jurors "return a second time without having agreed on a verdict, they shall not be sent out again without their own consent, unless they ask from the court some further explanation of the law." Jurors have now come back twice; Sullivan only gave Tuey-Rodriguez on the second occasion.7

Dawn Light arraignment on aggravated intimidation of witness charge: pleaded not guilty; told reporters "I just wanted to see Lindsay"; barred from returning to courthouse, ordered not to share juror images.78

No verdict as of Wednesday afternoon close. Deliberations set to resume Thursday 9 a.m.78910

Contested

No verdict. Criminal responsibility remains contested.

Limits

No official transcript claimed. Deliberation day reported via press live-blogs.

The witness count of "over 80" and exhibit count of "over 300" are attributed to Sullivan's Tuesday instruction as reported by outlets on 1 September 2026. Globe 3:12 p.m. Wednesday: "jurors heard from 84 witnesses."7 CBS Boston separately reported (on 1 Sep) the jury has deliberated for more than 23 hours; 85 witnesses and more than 200 pieces of evidence.5 These are outlet-attributed counts, not pooled.

Hour counts differ by outlet and timestamp: Globe 3:12 p.m. Wednesday "about 28 hours over five days";7 Globe 4:11 p.m. Wednesday "nearly 30 hours over five days";7 Boston 25 "roughly 30 hours over five days."9 These are outlet-attributed counts at different times Wednesday, not pooled.

Boston Globe's Tuey-Rodriguez / dynamite charge explainer (Ellement/Murphy, 8:10 a.m. Wednesday): legal authority Sullivan would have IF jurors alert deadlock again — was labeled as Globe legal explainer Wednesday morning, and the dynamite charge was in fact given Wednesday afternoon.2 Retired judge Drechsler commentary on frequency and outcomes is labeled as analyst commentary, not court rule.7

Associated Press mistrial possibility language and Elyse Hershon analyst quote on "usually the mistrial call" are attributed as AP/analyst contingency language, not a declared mistrial.310

WCVB reports "About 90 minutes later" from dynamite charge to dismissal is attributed as press approximate timing, not an official stamp.8

No verdict as of Wednesday close. Deliberations set to resume Thursday 9 a.m.
