What the record shows

Judge William Sullivan presided. Dr. Kirk Heilbrun finished his testimony. Dr. Gregory Saathoff (forensic psychiatrist, FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit) began testimony on direct examination. Sullivan ended the day shortly before 4:00 PM with Saathoff still on direct examination. Saathoff returns Wednesday. Closings are likely Thursday.¹

Dr. Kirk Heilbrun concluded Clancy was criminally responsible. He testified she retained awareness that her conduct was illegal. He testified her moral awareness was influenced by her desire to die and not leave the children behind. Heilbrun diagnosed bipolar II disorder with sleep deprivation and adverse medication reactions. He testified her mental state was more in line with altruistic filicide than with acute psychosis with command hallucinations. He described peritraumatic dissociation as more commonly experienced in that set of circumstances than psychotic symptoms. He testified she made "many ongoing decisions" to accomplish a killing like this in 18 to 20 minutes: why the basement, who among the children goes first, what to say to keep them from panicking.¹²³⁴

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington cross-examined Heilbrun on control, compensation, postpartum experience, and the contrast between grunting during the 911 call and saying "I tried to kill myself" to Patrick. On redirect, Heilbrun testified he reviewed more records than in any other case in his career. He testified he felt no pressure from prosecutors. He testified Clancy never told providers she had thoughts of harming her children, based on his recollection of the records.¹

Dr. Gregory Saathoff testified he interviewed Clancy on 29 May and 4 June 2026. Saathoff also spoke with Patrick Clancy. Saathoff testified Clancy reported hearing a voice that said: "This is your last chance. You have to kill your kids and then kill yourself." She reported the voice occurred after Patrick's call while she was at the refrigerator. Prosecutor Jennifer Sprague noted Patrick testified at least one child was already eating at that point. Saathoff testified this was the first time she reported experiencing auditory hallucinations to her medical providers. He testified the voice stopped when Callan was strangled.⁵ Saathoff testified it is unusual to hear a voice only once, have it be constant, and have it stop when the act is done. He stated: "Committing the act is not curative of the voice. I've not ever seen that." Saathoff testified the accounts were "markedly inconsistent."¹

Saathoff testified Clancy misled family members and providers. He testified she took anti-anxiety medication during nursing school but did not tell Patrick. He testified her texts and photos with the children contrasted with her later account. Saathoff testified he did not see evidence that Dr. Jennifer Tufts (treating psychiatrist) was notified that Clancy had decided against taking Lamictal.¹

Reddington requested a Daubert hearing. Sullivan allowed the testimony to continue. Reddington objected mid-answer during testimony about the children's will to survive. Sidebar occurred. Sullivan sent the jury home. Saathoff continues Wednesday.¹

Contested

Whether the command-hallucination account is consistent with known patterns. Saathoff testified the account is markedly inconsistent and that a voice stopping when the act is completed is unusual.

Whether altruistic filicide or command hallucination better explains her mental state. Heilbrun testified filicide was more in line with the evidence, and that peritraumatic dissociation is more commonly experienced than psychotic symptoms.

Postpartum psychosis as a diagnosis in general is not on trial. This defendant's criminal responsibility is.
