Prosoche: A Framework for Forensic Analysis of Institutional Document Chains

Abstract

Prosoche provides a structured framework for forensic analysis of institutional documents. Unlike confirmatory approaches that seek evidence supporting institutional conclusions, Prosoche systematically challenges document chains by tracing claims to their origins, detecting contradictions, identifying omissions, and mapping how authority accumulates independent of evidential quality. This paper presents the theoretical foundations, methodological components, and practical applications of Prosoche.

Lineage note. This work was previously published between 2023 and 2025 under the umbrella names Sovereign Analyst Framework (SAF) v2.x and Systematic Adversarial Methodology (S.A.M.). Both names are retired under Prosoche v1.0. The underlying phases, four-stage trace, eight-type contradiction taxonomy, and analytical components are unchanged from the most recent SAF / S.A.M.-labelled publications; only the umbrella name above them has changed.

1. Introduction

1.1 The Problem of Institutional Documentation

Institutional decisions affecting liberty, family integrity, professional reputation, and life outcomes rest on documentary foundations. Courts, regulatory agencies, healthcare systems, and social services generate vast document chains—reports citing reports, assessments referencing prior assessments, findings building on earlier findings.

A critical assumption underlies institutional reliance on these document chains: that later documents accurately represent earlier ones, that claims are verified before adoption, and that evidential quality is maintained across institutional boundaries. This assumption is frequently false.

1.2 The Need for Adversarial Analysis

Traditional document review approaches what we term "confirmatory bias"—reviewing documents to understand institutional conclusions rather than to challenge them. This approach accepts institutional framing, follows institutional logic, and interprets evidence within institutional assumptions.

Prosoche inverts this orientation. Rather than asking "what does the institution conclude and why?" Prosoche asks:

  • Where did this claim originate?
  • What evidence supported it at origin?
  • How has it changed during propagation?
  • What contradicting evidence exists?
  • What has been omitted?

This adversarial stance does not assume institutional bad faith. Rather, it recognizes that institutional pressures—time constraints, authority deference, defensive documentation, and confirmation bias—systematically degrade document quality in predictable ways.

1.3 Scope and Limitations

Prosoche is designed for:

  • Document chains spanning multiple institutions
  • Cases where stakes are high (liberty, family integrity, professional reputation)
  • Situations where institutional conclusions are being challenged
  • Analysis supporting legal, regulatory, or media scrutiny

Prosoche is not designed for:

  • Routine document review without adversarial purpose
  • Cases where institutional conclusions are being accepted
  • Analysis without access to underlying documents

2. Theoretical Foundations

2.1 Cascade Theory

Prosoche is built on cascade theory—the recognition that false premises propagate through institutional systems in predictable patterns. See Cascade Theory for full treatment.

Key insight: A claim need not be true to become authoritative. Institutional processes can launder weak claims into authoritative findings through:

  1. Authority accumulation: Each institutional adoption adds apparent credibility
  2. Mutation during propagation: Claims strengthen, hedging disappears, scope expands
  3. Verification failure: Receivers assume senders verified; no one actually checks
  4. Feedback failure: Outcomes don't trace back to origins to enable learning

2.2 Epistemology of Institutional Claims

Institutional documents make claims with varying epistemic status:

Critical principle: Epistemic status degrades across institutional boundaries. Observation becomes testimony becomes adoption—each step reduces reliability while often increasing certainty language.

3. The Four-Phase Methodology

Prosoche operates through four sequential phases, each with specific analytical objectives.

3.1 ANCHOR Phase: Origin Identification

Objective: Trace each consequential claim to its first documented appearance.

Key questions:

  • Where does this claim first appear in the documentary record?
  • What evidential basis existed at origin?
  • What certainty level was appropriate given original evidence?
  • Who made the original claim and what was their access to primary evidence?

Procedures:

  1. Identify consequential claims (those affecting outcomes)
  2. Trace backward through citation chains
  3. Locate first instance of each claim
  4. Assess origin quality (primary source, professional opinion, hearsay, speculation)
  5. Document what evidence existed vs. what was cited

Output: Origin analysis table showing each claim's first appearance, evidential basis, and appropriate certainty level.

3.2 INHERIT Phase: Propagation Tracking

Objective: Map how claims propagate across documents and institutions.

Key questions:

  • Which documents adopted each claim?
  • Did adopting documents verify or merely defer?
  • How did claims change during propagation?
  • Were there points where verification could/should have occurred?
  • What auxiliary assumptions must hold for the cited evidence to support the propagated claim?

Procedures:

  1. For each anchored claim, identify all subsequent documents containing it
  2. Classify adoption type (verbatim, paraphrase, implicit)
  3. Assess verification status (verified, unverified assumed, unverified intentional)
  4. Document boundary crossings (institution A → institution B)
  5. Note opportunities for verification that were missed
  6. Surface auxiliary assumptions: for each adoption, list the background assumptions a recipient must hold true to read the propagated claim from the cited source (observer competence, mental-state inference, "consistent with" reasoning, accurate contemporaneous recording). Mark adoptions resting on volatile or unverifiable assumptions as low-diagnostic-weight regardless of the cited document's authority.

The assumption-surface step addresses what philosophy of science calls confirmation holism (the Duhem–Quine thesis): no piece of evidence is decisive in isolation; every empirical claim rests on auxiliary assumptions that, if false, collapse the inference even when the surface evidence is intact (Quine, 1951). In institutional document chains the most consequential assumption failures are interpretive rather than technical — that a clinical observation supports a diagnostic inference, that "consistent with" language denotes causation, that a contemporaneous record captured what was actually said.

3.3 COMPOUND Phase: Mutation and Authority Analysis

Objective: Document how claims mutate and accumulate authority.

Key questions:

  • How did certainty language change across documents?
  • How did scope change (specific → general)?
  • How did attribution change (individual → institutional)?
  • What authority did claims gain through institutional endorsement?

Mutation types to detect:

  • Amplification: Hedging removed, certainty increased
  • Scope expansion: Single instance → pattern
  • Attribution laundering: Personal opinion → institutional finding
  • Context stripping: Qualifications removed

Authority analysis:

  • Track authority weight of each endorsing institution
  • Calculate cumulative authority independent of evidential quality
  • Identify points where authority outpaced evidence

3.4 ARRIVE Phase: Outcome Mapping

Objective: Connect document chain analysis to harmful outcomes.

Key questions:

  • What decisions were made based on document chain?
  • Would decisions have differed with accurate information?
  • What harm resulted from document chain failures?
  • Who bears responsibility for each failure point?

Causation analysis:

  • But-for causation: Would outcome occur without false premise?
  • Substantial factor: Did false premise materially contribute?
  • Responsibility allocation: Who failed to verify? Who propagated unverified claims?

Output: Causation analysis connecting document failures to outcomes, with responsibility mapping.


4. Analytical Components

4.1 Contradiction Detection

Systematic search for the eight contradiction types requires:

  1. Claim extraction: Identify all factual claims across document corpus
  2. Cross-reference: Compare claims across documents
  3. Logical analysis: Identify incompatibilities
  4. Severity assessment: Rate impact on conclusions

4.2 Omission Analysis

What's missing can be as significant as what's present:

Omission categories:

  • Exculpatory: Evidence supporting alternative conclusions
  • Contextual: Information giving different meaning to documented facts
  • Procedural: Process failures not documented
  • Temporal: Gaps in timeline
  • Contradicting: Evidence contradicting documented conclusions

Directional bias calculation:

Bias = (Prosecution-favoring omissions - Defense-favoring omissions) / Total omissions

A score approaching +1.0 indicates systematic prosecution bias.

4.3 Timeline Reconstruction

Temporal analysis reveals:

  • Impossible sequences (effects before causes)
  • Suspicious gaps (missing periods)
  • Compression/expansion (events packed into short periods or stretched)
  • Retroactive documentation (documents created after events they describe)

4.4 Source Reliability Assessment

For each source document:

  • Author's access to primary evidence
  • Professional training and expertise
  • Potential biases or conflicts
  • Track record of accuracy
  • Internal consistency

5. Quality Controls

5.1 Analyst Bias Mitigation

Prosoche analysts must:

  • Document working hypotheses before analysis
  • Actively seek evidence contradicting working hypotheses
  • Maintain audit trails showing analytical process
  • Subject analyses to independent review

The audit-trail requirement is a cognitive override mechanism, not accountability theatre. Dual-process research (Kahneman, 2011; Heuer, 1999) shows that the rapid, heuristic-driven System 1 produces most analytical failures and that bias warnings alone do not engage the slower, deliberate System 2. Forcing the analyst to transcribe each reasoning step in writing — what the USAF Framework for Analytic Cognition (2012) calls epistemic writing — slows reasoning into System 2 by mechanical necessity, intercepting heuristic leaps before they harden into conclusions.

5.2 Claim Verification

Every claim in Prosoche analysis must:

  • Cite specific document and location
  • Distinguish observation from inference
  • Note confidence level
  • Acknowledge limitations

5.3 Peer Review

Prosoche analyses should undergo:

  • Independent re-analysis of document subset
  • Review of methodology application
  • Challenge of conclusions

6. Applications

Prosoche supports:

  • Challenge to expert witness testimony
  • Disclosure applications (what should have been but wasn't disclosed)
  • Appeals based on fresh evidence
  • Professional negligence claims

8. Conclusion

Prosoche provides structured tools for challenging institutional document chains. By tracing claims to origins, tracking propagation, documenting mutation, and mapping outcomes, Prosoche reveals how institutional processes can generate authoritative-seeming conclusions from weak evidential foundations.

Prosoche is not anti-institutional—it is pro-accountability. Strong institutions benefit from mechanisms that detect and correct error. Weak institutions that resist scrutiny harm those they serve. Prosoche provides the analytical framework to distinguish the two.
