Underdetermination

The underdetermination thesis holds that any body of evidence is compatible with multiple incompatible theories. No matter how extensive our observations, there will always be alternative theories that accommodate all the evidence but make different predictions about unobserved cases.

This thesis has moderate and radical versions. Moderate underdetermination holds that evidence alone does not uniquely determine theory choice; scientists must also invoke theoretical virtues like simplicity, explanatory power, and consilience. Radical underdetermination holds that there is no fact of the matter about which theory is correct; theory choice is ultimately conventional.

For evidence evaluation, underdetermination implies that any conclusion drawn from evidence could, in principle, be challenged by an alternative interpretation of the same evidence. The critical analyst should ask: What alternative hypotheses are consistent with this evidence? Why has the expert selected this interpretation rather than others? What additional evidence would discriminate between competing interpretations?


Scientific Realism and Anti-Realism

Do scientific theories describe reality, or are they merely useful tools for prediction and control? This question defines the debate between scientific realism and various anti-realist positions.

Scientific Realism

Scientific realists hold that successful scientific theories are approximately true descriptions of the world, including its unobservable aspects. Electrons, genes, and quarks exist as science describes them; theories succeed because they accurately represent reality.

Arguments for realism include:

The No Miracles Argument: It would be miraculous if our theories were successful without being approximately true. The predictive and technological success of science is best explained by theoretical truth.

The Convergence of Theories: As science progresses, theories converge on similar structures even when developed independently. This convergence suggests that theories are tracking objective features of reality.

The Success of Novel Predictions: When theories predict phenomena unknown at the time of formulation (like the bending of light by gravity), and those predictions are confirmed, this suggests the theory has latched onto something real.
